How to Satisfy Your Sweet Cravings

When you are trying to maintain a healthy and balanced diet, it can be tough to know what to do when your sweet tooth strikes! Most snacks that would satisfy these sweet cravings are packed with sugar and processed ingredients which will hit the flavor spot but also have a potentially negative impact on your energy levels. Plus, these types of snacks are loaded with extra calories that can add up quickly!  So, what can you do when sweet cravings come on strong while you are trying to make healthier snack choices? 


First, it’s important to understand why we have these sweet cravings. While some people’s cravings are impacted by lifestyle factors such as lack of quality sleep, increased stress levels, or dietary deficiencies, many of us just adopt the habit of treating ourselves to something sweet in between meals or after dinner. A happy, healthy lifestyle is about balance and not feeling deprived, which is why I love to find ways to indulge those cravings while still staying on track with your health and wellness goals!


So, the next time you feel a sweet craving coming on, here are some delicious but healthier ways to satisfy it: 

 

  • Drink Water. Did you know that dehydration is a common cause of sweet cravings? That’s why I always grab a glass of water when my sweet tooth comes calling! Once you are hydrated, then you can assess if you are truly hungry for a snack -  or if you just needed a little H2O. If the thought of plain water seems way too boring, then you can always make your own “spa water” at home by adding fresh fruit and herbs to water in a mason jar or pitcher and letting the flavors come together for a couple of hours before drinking!

 

  • Reach for Fresh Fruit. Fresh fruit is Mother Nature’s candy! This is a great way to get the dose of sweetness that you are craving while also doing some good for your body. Fresh fruits are low in calories, high in vitamins, minerals, and fiber, and offer many other health benefits. There are so many ways to enjoy it, including topping a bowl of fresh berries with a dollop of whipped cream, baking apple slices sprinkled with cinnamon, or grabbing a handful of frozen grapes to get that “popsicle” texture!
