Try These Heart Healthy Tips!

Denise Austin for Heart Health

February is Heart Health Month –  and what better way to celebrate than by showing our hearts a little TLC? With heart disease as the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, it’s so important to understand the risk factors as well as the simple steps that can act as preventative medicine for our hearts every day.  While family history plays a role, studies show that we can control 60% of how our heart functions through our own lifestyle choices.

That’s why I’m sharing my favorite Heart Healthy Tips with you below! Not only are these tips simple enough to try TODAY, but they will also help keep you on track with all of your health and wellness goals!

  1. Pump Up the Cardio. Like any other muscle in your body, your heart needs to be conditioned with exercise. Workouts focused on cardio are a great way to get your heart rate elevated and your blood flowing! The good news is that you don’t have to sweat it out for hours at the gym – just 30 minutes 3 times a week is all you need! You can start with my favorite 5-minute Heart Healthy Cardio Workout (below) to help you get moving while burning calories and blasting that metabolism!

  2. Eat More Whole Foods. When hunger strikes, it’s tempting to reach for processed foods that may fill us up initially, but are loaded with extra sugars and unhealthy fats. Instead, choose lean protein like chicken, fish, or eggs, as well as whole grains, fruits, veggies, and nuts to satisfy your hunger while also keeping your heart healthy. Craving something sweet? Reach for my EVER BETTER™ Protein Cookie Bites, made with healthy ingredients like nuts and seeds, plus have the added benefit of providing protein and probiotics for immunity. And, these bites are low in sugar and carbs, gluten free, and keto friendly!

  3. Get More Shuteye. There’s nothing like a great night’s sleep to help you feel refueled and ready to face the day! When you aren’t getting enough quality sleep, your body isn’t getting the time it needs to recharge – which can have a negative impact on your cardiovascular health. Studies have linked a lack of sleep to problems such as high blood pressure and a heightened risk of heart disease. So, be sure to make sleep a priority by creating a relaxing nighttime ritual and sticking to a regular schedule.

  4. Keep Stress at Bay. Stress is an inevitable part of life, which is why it’s so important to make time for everyday self-care. Some of my favorite ways to relax and refocus my mind are gentle yoga, meditation, deep breathing, and stretching. And, stepping away from your smart phone and other devices to spend time with your loved ones is another great way to help keep stress levels down.

  5. Stay Hydrated. Your heart is working 24/7 and needs hydration in order to stay in top shape! Water is the absolute BEST way to hydrate because – unlike other beverages such as fruit juice, soda, and sports drinks – it’s naturally calorie-free and sugar-free. Need a little flavor boost with your H20? Try adding some fresh fruit slices and mint to create your own “spa water” right at home!

With these simple tips, you can help keep your heart healthy this month – and all year long! And don’t forget to add EVER BETTER™ Protein Cookie Bites to your heart-healthy plan. Remember…You (and Your Heart) Are Worth It!

Let’s live EVER BETTER™ - together!
